When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

My previous 14 year old surge tongue actuator (same thing different manufacturer) developed a leaky seal causing rust inside the brake fluid reservoir. There was also some borderline annoying wear. The Dexter part was an exact replacement. Full braking potential restored for the boat trailer! Would recommend Dexter for many applications.

by:

My purchase was smooth and shipping was very informative on delivery time. I will be ordering another one soon to replace an old one on another trailer. etrailer makes it easy.

by:

Perfect match, should be an easy replacement. All I need now is for the heat and humidity to go away. Until then I'll hide in my basement wood shop. Thanks again

by:

Anna was great at helping me confirm what I needed to order. I installed the Kodiak 10” disc brake kit, new lines and Dexter actuator with no trouble. I got rid of my rusty drum brakes that were a hassle to clean and maintain in salt water. Shipping was fast and my order was complete. I’d definitely recommend etrailer.com to friends!!

by:

Perfect fit great quality, fast shipping!! Thanks again Beach Trailer Sales

by:

Original brake actuator was welded to the trailer tongue. I had to cut it back and weld a new piece of 3x3 tube steel and extend it out enough to install the new actuator. It lengthened the trailer by about a foot but worked out pretty well. The new one works great.

Outstanding replacement! Much better than OEM!

Hey Lee! I'm happy to hear everything went on so smoothly! When do you get to launch your boat into the water for the season?

by:

I bought this as a replacement for an identical unit that was damaged in the boat yard. As I recall, etrailer was the only one who had the unit at the time. I called etrailer to discuss specifics, and they were friendly and helpful. No surprise that the unit performed exactly as the one that was damaged.

by:

Perfect replacement

by:

It is better than what I had. It leaks and without taking it apart It is hard to tell where. When I installed it I did so with brand new lines as well. I have checked the tightness at all connections visible. It works good if I keep fluid in it.

by:

The hitch is great. Disc brakes vs the drums I had before make noticeably more stopping power. My one regret is that while there is a backing lockout of the surge brake via a solenoid valve, for high mountain trailering, the surge brake stays applied when you’re descending in low gear. I smoked my brakes coming down from 5,500 ft last week, expelling a decent amount of high temp red bearing grease. I guess if steep mountain roads are the norm, maybe an electric brake overhaul would have been better.

by:

I installed this as part of a disk brake retrofit to a tandem axle boat trailer that didn’t come with brakes. It was an easy swap from my factory coupler and connected fine to the flexible brake line kit. How to bleed the brakes wasn’t obvious from the instructions and YouTube videos are mostly out of date, but all it took was a long handled flat screwdriver to action the pump and apply pressure. The drop and go system is easy to use. I wish this model had a manual reverse solenoid lockout but the electric lockout has been working fine.

by:

A complete replacement that was easy to install.

by:

I dove into this job of replacing my entire rusted out disc brake system on my double axle boat trailer having never done it before. Between the variety of part choices and accurate descriptions coupled with excellent phone service and on site videos, I was able to rebuild my trailer brakes system and suspension in total. I compared prices with the trailer manufacturer and found that etrailer either beat the price or matched it but I chose to give my business to etrailer because of the service! I do recommend this company and will use etrailer.com again anytime!

by:

I changed the brakes on my 1995 boat trailer from drum to disc. I was able to figure out what to order on the etrailer web site. The whole project was relatively easy. I just had to remove the old parts and bolt on the new ones. The new trailer hitch actuator is much easier to used than my old one.

by:

solid actuator for a fair price. The auto latch feature is a nice feature.

1 year later...no issues. Auto hitch still works great. I love the and go feature. So far no rust or corrosion anywhere. Highly recommend.

by:

This an almost perfect replacement for the original. I had to reroute the brake fluid line to met trailer line. Just got back from the lake a trip that had lots of mountains and we were impressed with how smoothly it worked.

by:

I have been ordering from etrailer.com for years and have not been disappointed. Their prices are great, they communicate the order status very well, and ship the products quickly.
I have been having ongoing issues with my trailer brake pressure not relieving, thus applying the brakes continuously. This order was for a new actuator which I believe will correct the problem. I just installed the actuator and it fit as expected.

  • Recommended Drum to Disc Brake Kit for a 3500 lb Tandem Axle Boat Trailer
Mark, the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR35DKG appears to be what you're looking for but you're going to need to verify which bearings your trailer uses right now to make sure it's compatible. The bearings, actuator # DX29FR and brake lines # 18TA-BLKIT would need to be added separately as well.

  • What is the Best Disc Brake Actuator for a Four Winns Horizon 190 Boat Trailer
If you are wanting to replace the entire surge brake actuator on your Four Winns Horizon 190 boat trailer then I have exactly what you will need. I recommend using the Dexter Disc Brake Actuator part # 099-175-20. This actuator works with 2" hitch balls. It has a 7,500 lb weight capacity, fits a 3" wide channel, and includes a electric lockout feature so you will not have any issues backing the trailer up. The actuator also offers a completely bolt-on installation. The Titan brake actuators...

  • How to Bleed Brake Lines with Titan Model 60 Hydraulic Brake Actuator Without Electric Lockout
The Dexter Brake Actuator part # 099-175-20 replaced the Titan 60 that has a master cylinder with a fitting at the end. The fitting is a 3/16 inverted flare where the brake lines connect to. You do not need an extra fitting when you use the actuator. If you ever need to replace the fitting, it is part # T4750300. I recommend Kodiak Brake Line for Single Axle trailers part # 18SI-BLKIT. The flexible line of the Kodiak kit has a thread size of 3/8"-24 and fits a 3/16" fitting like the one...

  • Trailer Coupler Needed To Convert To Electric Over Hydraulic Brakes
Hey Kelvin, From what I can find the Titan Model 6 brake actuators have their bolt holes almost in a straight line at the bottom of the coupler so you would have drill new holes in order to mount a new brake actuator. It also shows the Model 6 having a 2-5/16" ball coupler so the Demco # DM62VR and Dexter # 099-175-20 wouldn't be the right choice. If you're wanting to switch to electric over hydraulic then you'll want to go with a standard coupler like the Demco Channel Tongue Trailer...

  • No Fluid in Brake Line and Trailer Brakes Locking up
Hi Greg, Based on what you’re describing, if you cracked the brake line and got no fluid when the brakes were applied, that points more toward that the system isn’t building or sending pressure at all. In a surge setup with a lockout solenoid, fluid should still come out unless something upstream is blocking it or the actuator isn’t doing its job. There could be a blockage in the line or a problem with the master cylinder inside the actuator. A good next step for you would be to crack...

  • Solution for Prestige Boat Trailer Surge Brake Actuator Replacement
Hey Shawn, so you have a now discontinued Atwood actuator that is totally obsolete so you will need to have it removed and install a replacement like the part # 099-175-20 which is for surge disc brakes. You'll need to have your Atwood cut off and this welded back on it it's place.

  • Replacement for Atwood Surge Brake Actuator
The Atwood MPD 85778 is not actually a model number for their actuator, it is a literature number - basically a manual number so I wouldn't be able to tell you what a direct replacement would be. You will need to match your actuator to either drum or disc brakes, the weight capacity, coupler size and what size tongue it bolts onto. For example, if you had disc brakes, a 3" wide channel tongue, needed a 7,000 lb capacity and had either a 1-7/8", 2" or 50-mm hitch ball a great option...

Hey Jason. The etrailer Anti-Rattle Hitch Collar item # e38FV will stop any rattling or vibrations you're feeling that are transferred from your ball mount through your hitch. However, seeing as how you have a boat trailer I'm guessing what you're feeling is your surge brake actuator functioning as it's designed. What kind of coupler do you have on your trailer?
